გენდერის კვლევების დოქტორი, სოციალურ მეცნიერებათა ცენტრი, ივანე ჯავახიშვილის თბილისის სახლემწიფო უნივერსიტეტი. თანამედროვე ინდოეთის ისტორიის მაგისტრი, ჯავაჰარლალ ნეჰრუს უნივერსიტეტი, ნიუ დელი, ინდოეთი.

მაია ბარქაია თანამშრომლობს სოციალურ მეცნიერებათა ცენტრთან 2010 წლიდან. 2014 წელს დაიცვა სადოქტორო დისერტაცია თემაზე „წინააღმდეგობა, სტუდენტური აქტივიზმი და გენდერი საქართველოსა და ინდოეთში“ და მიიღო გენდერის დოქტორის აკადემიური ხარისხი. 2015 წლიდან ის არის თბილისის სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტის გენდერის ინსტიტუტის მოწვეული ლექტორი. 2008 წელს მან დაამთავრა პრაქტიკული აღმოსავლეთმცოდენეობის ინსტიტუტის აღმოსავლეთმცოდნეობის ფაკულტეტი. 2010 წელს მოიპოვა ინდოეთის ისტორიის მაგისტრის ხარისხი ჯავაჰარლალ ნეჰრუს უნივერსიტეტში. 2011 წლიდნ ის მუშაობდა სხვადასხვა კვლევით პროექტებზე საქართველოსა და ინდოეთში. მისი კვლევითი ინტერესები მოიცავს შემდეგ სფეროებს: სოციალური მოძრაობები და გენდერი, სტუდენტური აქტივიზმი, სუბალტერნული ჯგუფები და გენდერი, შრომა და გენდერი, პოლიტიკა და გენდერი.
